THE ROLE OF ADDITIVES IN THE PRESSURELESS SINTERING OF NITROGEN CERAMICS FOR ENGINE APPLICATIONS

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This review outlines research programs that have led to the development of silicon nitride ceramics for use as high-temperature structural components. Densification can only be carried out by pressureless sintering, which requires an oxide additive in order to form an oxynitride liquid that promotes shrinkage and, the phase transformation from alpha to beta . The kinetics are interpreted by particle rearrangement and solution-diffusion-precipitation. In order to understand the role of additives it is important to know the phase relationships in various M-Si-O-N and M-Si-Al-O-N systems and how these are related to microstructural development and final properties. New approaches to controlling microstructure and properties are detailed.
