The role of mesenteric organ in inflammatory bowel disease: far more than originally proposed

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

It has been recently recognized the mesentery as a single anatomical and structural unit with functional properties that plays a role in both physiological and pathological mechanisms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Components of mesentery including adipose tissue, lymphatics, verves, and vesicular are especially implicated in the pathogenesis and disease progress of Crohn's disease. Mesentery and inflammatory bowel disease has several relevant aspects, including diagnosis, disease phenotype, disease severity, extent of lesion, medical therapy and surgical resection. Whether mesenteric lesionsare the cause or consequence of inflamed bowel is debatable. The mesentery may be therapeutically targeted by pharmacological and operative intervention and possibly change the disease progress and outcomes of IBD.
