Towards Responsible Consumption

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter discusses the concept of responsible consumption, defined to be consumption that fulfils our immediate responsibilities without harming our ability to fulfil our broader responsibilities. This can include concerns about personal, social and environmental matters and an appreciation of the moral value of ourselves, others and the planet. We consider the concept of consumer-citizen and various categories that scholars have used to categorise consumers who were judged to behave in responsible or virtuous ways, such as green, sustainable, mindful, and ethical consumption. We also note the importance of attending to contextual and structural barriers and competing personal responsibilities when discussing consumers’ responsibilities. Achieving truly responsible consumption, we conclude, requires individual efforts and broader social and policy interventions to foster long-term change.
