Abstract

This paper examines a wide variety of issues concerning the doctorpatient relation, the medical model, the role of technology in self-care, and the issues of patient empowerment in current healthcare systems. The aim of the paper is to open up a debate concerning many of the background assumptions embedded in the rapidly expanding fields of self-care and home-health care, and to re-shape the role of technology in the design of a truly patient-centred healthcare system.
