Abstract
This paper presents a two-section near traveling wave optical amplifier used as an external modulator accomplishing phase modulation. A DPSK heterodyne system has been simulated and the eye diagram has been obtained by numerical large-signal analysis at 0.5 and 2.5 Gbit/s. The analysis shows how it is possible to carry out high bit rate by adjustment of the ratio of the modulation currents of two sections. This device can have an important impact on broadband optical networks.
