Abstract
This performance of WATERSHED took place at Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin as part of their Sundays @ Noon concert series. The programme was titled Lough Derg 1 & 2, which featured both Ailís Ní Ríain's WATERSHED song cycle commissioned in 2020 by Yonit Kosovske, and the HERMIT SONGS song cycle by Samuel Barber, both cycles of which have texts about Lough Derg, one lake in Counties Clare & Tipperary, and the other lake in Donegal. Ní Ríain's song cycle sets music to five poems by Dr Jessica Brown from her book 'And Say'. Brown's texts reveal a profound exploration of the human relationship with land and water, with a special focus on geographical areas in the west of Ireland.
This performance in Dublin featured contralto Julie Comparini and pianist Yonit Kosovske as well as poetry readings by Jessica Brown.
Yonit, Julie, and Jessica have performed the WATERSHED song cycle in multiple concerts throughout Ireland and Germany, each concert curated with another song cycle (Barber, Elgar, Lili Boulanger), alongside different spoken poetry (in English or German), and sometimes with visual art, such as abstract oil paintings of Lough Derg by Simon deBrun and a live water installation by Sara Förster with moving water images projected onto a cathedral ceiling throughout the performance.
