Abstract

The WATERSHED album features the song cycle of the same name composed by Ailís Ní Ríain who set music to five poems by Dr Jessica Brown from her book 'And Say'. Brown's texts reveal a profound exploration of the human relationship with land and water, with a special focus on geographical areas in the west of Ireland. The song cycle was commissioned by Yonit Kosovske in 2020 with funding from an Arts Council Music Commissions Award. Performers include contralto Julie Comparini and pianist Yonit Kosovske. The album also includes poetry readings by Jessica Brown, interwoven with soundscapes along and near Lough Derg in counties Clare and Tipperary, Ireland. Kosovske and Comparini have performed the WATERSHED song cycle in multiple concerts throughout Ireland and Germany.
