Steering the emotional rollercoaster: How entrepreneurs’ emotions and emotion regulation strategies impact firm internationalisation

Student thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

Entrepreneurs experience intense emotions but little is known about the nature of these emotions or how they are managed within contemporary internationally-oriented business environments. This thesis examined 28 entrepreneurs and their internationalising firms to understand how, why and when emotions arose for entrepreneurs; and how their emotion regulation strategies influenced the ways opportunities were evaluated and exploited during firm internationalisation. This research contributes new knowledge about entrepreneurs’ emotions and emotion regulation strategies, and their impact on the way opportunities are developed for internationalisation. This offers theoretical contributions to the entrepreneurial internationalisation literature, and practical contributions for entrepreneurship training and education.
